Iggy and the Stooges– Ready To Die
Release date: 20130430

Rating: 4/5
Iggy and the Stooges return with what is noted as the follow-up to Raw Power (that’s what the promo note says) with 3 of the original members (Iggy, James Williamson and Scott Asheton) and Mike Watt on bass. “Burn” is fucking sick and highly reminiscent of their early days. I feel like I’m in Ann Arbor, MI circa 1973. Mike Watt does Ron Asheton (RIP) proud on bass. “Sex and Money” is the typical wag-your-cock anthem and I’m sure as old as he is, Iggy still does such a thing. Ick. “Job” is about a guy frustrated with his job, frustrated with hipsters and sexually frustrated. Is that Iggy impersonating Joey Ramone on the rather post-modern “Gum”? Iggy’s voice is thick on “Unfriendly World” and it resembles his solo material. The title track is fucking killer, sounding glam in spots. “DD” is a fun ditty about titties. Don’t spin it. “Beat That Guy” and “The Departed” don’t sound like standard Stooges material. What they do show is a mature side of the band, or more like a group of old guys contemplating their mortality.
I’m glad to see a new Stooges album. They’re like an old friend, always welcome to drop on in and have a beer.
