Jazz inflected pieces with an American flavor. These are original and/or premiere recordings. Try tracks 3, 6, 9 (a well recognized work)

Etudes and Parodies

Instrumental pieces written by a computer composer, returning to his instrumental roots. Most of these pieces are his first compositions for the instruments involved–nice works! Try tracks 1, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11

Little Imber

Title piece written in homage to a still uninhabited village in Britain which was taken over by the military in WWII. Pieces are slow, quiet, lyrical, muted, almost ambient. Try sampling since pieces are on average 30 mins long.

The Theory of Impossible Melody

Computer music with voices and occasional instruments. Very quiet. Definitely avant-garde. Liner notes say “Polansky creates musical expositions of phenomenal reality.” I don’t understand that, but perhaps someone else does! Worth exploring and sampling.

Silenced Voices

Soundscapes, muted voices, muted instruments, daily sounds, a crow–eerie, delicate, quiet. Songs are on average 12 mins long–try sampling any!

Choros Nos. 2, 3, 10 and 12

Contemporary Brazilian composer. Pieces can be ominous, yet playful, and keep you listening. Track 4 quite lovely, light in tone, but with some sadness. Track 5 has male chorus in addition to instruments

Musica da Camera

Contemporary chamber music performed by Ensemble Dissonanza. Some pieces are ethereal. Try tracks 7-9 or 11-13 (very lyrical)

Stars of the Lid and Their Refinement of the Decline

Minimalist, droning melodies that alternate between the ominous and the melancholy. The perfect music for late night introspection. Disc 1: try 2, 4, 8, 9, 10 but play all! Disc 2: try 4,5,7 but play all! (thanks to Tom Little for this review!)

E.P.

This is a US import of the British pop-punk/garage band The Pigeon Detectives. It is a collection of their 4 biggest singles. Plenty of angst to go around. RIYL: The Killers Try: All

Lovers & Dollars

Upbeat americana, nicely blending a variety of native styles it switches between a folky blues feel and midwestern rock. Plenty of dirty guitar riffs and catchy vocals. RIYL: Ryan Adams, Todd Snider Try: 1*,2,5,8*,9*

Best of Luck

Post-punk pop with hints of alternative rock flavorings. Catchy melodies with spunky rhythms. RIYL: Fugazi, The Fall, Interpol Try: 2*, 9, 3 FCC: 7

Harmony and Dissidence

Second release from Foo Fighter guitarist Chris Shiflett’s band. Dave Grohl plays drums on half the tracks, Taylor Hawkins on the other half. In the same vain as Foo Fighters, Jackson United stays true to the post-grunge world of alternative rock, clearly incorporating ska and punk. Lyrics tend to have social themes. Try: 1,2,3,6,8,9*,14 FCC […]

Tragedy & Legacy

Take the touring pianist for Panic at the Disco and former members of Ambulance Ltd. and you get the catchy side-project of Black Gold. With an electro backbone, catchy melodies and an overall danceable atmosphere this material is a little bit more grown up then, say, P@tD. RIYL: Panic at the Disco, Ambulance Ltd. Try: […]

Demon Love-2003-The Compulsions

The Compulsions are a heavily 80’s/Cocaine influenced band. The album originally titled “Cocaine” has been renamed to “Demon Love.” The album was clearly written under the influence/withdrawal of cocaine, making this somewhat less creative than any other coked up rock band, but the music is good. RIYL- Guns n Roses Favs- 1,3,6 FCC Warning -2

Marigolds-2008-Ryan Auffenberg

Ryan Auffenberg can only be described as post modern americana. Marigolds is extremely smooth and well produced, making this an album to set aside for relaxing occasions. RIYL-Newton Faulkner Favs- 2,3,8 FCC Clean

Serial Thrillers-2008-Serial Thrillers

Serial Thrillers offer a sound similar to the Postal Service but much more upbeat. The vocals seem to be the only trait setting this band apart from any other modern rock band. The lyrics are shallow, aka radio-able. RIYL- Postal Service Favs- 1,2,4

Behind Closed Doors-2007-Shameless Children

The Shameless Children is a relatively new project of Haleh June and Omid Fard. Their newest album “Behind Closed Doors” throws down female vocals on top of heavy metal riffs. The unique sound brushes psycedelia on the neck as well, making this an album to be reckoned with. RIYL-The Sounds Favs-1,2,3

Brown Submarine-2008-Boston Spaceships

Boston Spaceships is a collaboration of talented musicians, but the product they offer titled “Brown Submarine” seems to be a generic light rock album with under-acheiving vocals/lyrics. The sound they have found is a monotonous light rock that is suitable for backround music so low you can’t hear it.

Girls Like Us

Fair, somewhat jazzy release from this band led by Cewleste Kranz and Rebecca Folsom both on vocals and guitar. Best cuts are 3, 7, 8 and 9.

Chances

Nice release from this Oregon vocalist and multi-instrumentalist – blend of folk, blues, old-time and rock. Best are 2, 4, 8 and 10.

King Easy Radio Sampler Volume 4

Fine compilation of Americana, bluegrass and folk.
