From Grammy-nominated Brazilian singer-songwriter Maria do Céu Whitaker Poças (born in 1980).  New compositions with modern Brazilian arrangements. This is a pre-release digital download. The CD is due out on July 7th 2009. CéU (céu) means “sky” and “heaven” in Portuguese.

Issa Remixed

Derived from the Malian artist’s 2008 CD “Mali Koura”, which featured Issa’s low-key vocals and his Ngoni, a six-string version of a banjo-like instrument.  This remix is a collaboration with a diverse group of remix artists and features energetic West African fusion with a mix of styles from electronica and dance to house and funk. Off the Grid EP

This Afrobeat EP features four new CabP compositions and a remix. Proceeds are shared with Journalists Against Aids (JAAIDS) in Nigeria.  First three tracks are more interesting than the last two. Note: All three of Chicago Afrobeat Project’s CDs were just sent to WRUV by the band.

Move to Silent Unrest

Second CD from this talented Afrobeat band featuring their own compositions. Proceeds are shared with Journalists Against Aids (JAAIDS) in Nigeria.  More experimental and varied than their first CD, and arguably their best.

Chicago Afrobeat Project

This talented Afrobeat group performs their own energetic compositions. The band’s earnings are shared with Journalists Against Aids (JAAIDS) in Nigeria. This is their first CD. This was released in 2005 and so should not be recorded as new music

Rusted Root – Stereo Radio

I am not really into Rusted Root at all but this album is ok.  First studio album from them in 7 years apparantly.  Definitley has that twangy, worldbeat like jam rock sound.  Suspicious Minds cover is decent, and I did like the hard rock to groovathon to slower acoustical segues from tracks 6-8.    FCC Clean […]

Headless Heroes – The Silence of Love

Album of covers…including Daniel Johnston’s “True Love will Find you In the End” and Jesus and Mary Chain’s “Just Like Honey”.  Kind of like psychedlic folk covers with strings and some horns.  Alela Diane’s voice is delicate and articulate.  FCC Clean RIYL Cat Power Play 1,2,4,6,9

Pink Mountaintops – Outside Love

The first time I listened to this album I was kind of unenthused.  Listening back to it now I have to say there are a lot of beautiful parts.  Like slow acoustical songs with accompanying underlying drones that are sometimes orchestral and sometimes twangy.  Vocal heavy but catchy male and female voices work harmoniously together.  “Bittersweet” is how […]

Sleep Sun – Embrace

Solid Psychedlic rock outfit from San Francisco!  This sextet rocks out for sure.  Pretty eclectic album overall.  Mood changes from like all out noise rock to more slower acoustic introspective to dark pulsing head bangers.  Solid guitar and drums.  Kind of higher melodic male vox.  RIYL some parts reminded me of early Sabbath, or if like Radiohead was a unknown garage band.  […]

Jogujo Circuit – a new tide

I would describe this album as “airy”.  They combine like mellow electro with a bit of dreamy trumpet, soothing vibe patterns, and softer vocs.  Trio is from Copenhagen.  Scratchy samples sound like light summer rain layered over danceable mellow melodies.  RIYL like a jazzier Tortoise or Tommy Guerrero playing in the clouds.  MY FAVORITE OF CDS I”VE REVIEWED THIS MONTH FYI […]

Estranged Meadow

Strix Vega has a mellow West Coast sound.  With influences ranging from Pink Floyd, The Doors, Neil Young ,The Shins and Chris Connelly they blend these bands into a mellow, melodic sound.  They mix a touch of country in as well.  A well made album that has a nice laid back feel perfect to listen […]

The Show is on the Road

Paleface apparently has quite a checkered past.  Never quite making it as a punk rocker/ alt-rocker (his ex-roommate Beck had better luck) he stripped down to a simpler acoustic sound.  With a roughed up voice similar to Tom Waits, he has a country sound but you can hear hints of his past coming through.

The Hot Left-AIFF Master

The Hot Left’s debut album “The Hot Left-AIFF Master” is pretty much standard post punk/alt rock fare.  As you listen to the album you get the feeling they’re trying really, really hard to be “cool”.  Nothing new here.
