Hollie Cook – Twice (Mr Bongo)

Second throwback-reggae-tinged tropical pop CD from this British vocalist; daughter of Sex Pistols drummer Paul Cook & Culture Club vocalist Jeni Cook (Boy George is Holly’s godfather). Formerly with the post-punk band “The Slits”. Features well-integrated strings by the Macedonian Radio Symphonic Orchestra! Nice laid-back summer music to make you sway.

Caetano Veloso – Abracaco (Nonesuch)

From the legendary Brazilian composer, singer, guitarist, writer, political activist, & Tropicalia pioneer, this CD won a Latin Grammy award in 2012 (his 9th), but is only now being released in North America. The title translates to “big hug.” Blends the classic Tropicalia style with contemporary styles from shoe-gaze to post-rock. Wonderful.

OS Mutantes – Fool Metal Jacket (Krian)

New incarnation of a band from San Paulo that pioneered the irreverent, psychedelic “tropicalia” movement in 1960s Brazil.
