Second collection of Afro-Cuban gems from this creative young (born 1993) Cuban singer-songwriter, first discovered & nurtured professionally by Gillies Peterson of Havana Cultura fame. Sonzeira – Tam Tam Tam Reimagnined (Brownswood)
Brazilian musical culture was gravely disrupted by a military coup in 1964. Here, Gilles Peterson joins the ranks of those seeking to resurrect what was lost, working with top contemporary musicians to re-imagine “Tam Tam Tam;” a 1957 recording with distinctly Afro-Brazilian flavors. Part of Gillies (j-eye-alls) Peterson’s Havana Cultura initiative celebrating Cuban culture. Daymé is a talented young composer (born 1993) & vocalist influenced by Cuban jazz & Santeria songs, & has a gorgeous and powerful but also relaxed vocal style (she admires Ella Fitzgerald). The band was assembled for this recording & showcases her vocals nicely. […]
