Royal City

Formed in 1999 and disbanding in 2004, Royal City’s self titled release is a greatest hits album that tells the story of the band.  The album sounds more country with an alt edge than the other way around.  Good lyrics and an easy rolling sound, the album is a pleasant listen.  It’s easy to see […]

Paradise

Hecuba’s third release Paradise has a strong dark wave sound.  Stilted lyrics with sharp synthesizers and even sharper beats there is a Kraftwerk like delivery mixed with almost a Dead Can Dance or Falcao and Monashee feel.  Sound odd?  Well it is, but the combination does work.  Not for everybody, this baroque synth pop band […]

Fabriclive 48

Is it possible for Fabric Records to make a bad album?  So far the answer is no.  Their latest release is Fabriclive 48 featuring the artist Filthy Dukes.  Catchy, dancy techno with creative hooks and loops, this 30 minute continuous mix disc will have you shaking your money maker and hitting repeat.

Radio Tek San

Released in 2003, Radio Tek San by Tek San has blended ambient dub with jazz overtones.  Trumpets echo in the background as a steady beat keeps things moving.  A few tracks have a mellow drum and bass feel to them.  Liquid and dreamy with a futuristic sound, this is something to listen to while trekking […]

Up To No Good

Birds and Batteries latest, Up To No Good ep is electro-indie pop with a funky edge.  Strong beats mixed with warbled synths and Ratatat-esque guitar rifts, this genre bending album will appeal to indie rockers and rpmers alike.  Definitely check it out!

Waveform Transmissions Vol. 2

Waveform, one of the top ambient/lounge labels has released a new compilation.  Waveform Transmissions Vol. 2 is a mix of ambient and lounge with some ambient dub mixed in.  Very mellow and smooth with a steady beat, perfect to chill to while watching the autumn sunset.  An excellent compilation.

Wicked Hemlocks

Brooklyn-based psych rock band. Sounds like it should have more bass than it does, but pretty right on. A bit like a more mellow Strokes. Clean sounding guitars and drums, slightly fuzzed vocals, sythesized keyboards…close to British 80s rock in a way too. Groov-a-licious. Play: 1, 2, 5, ALL! FCC: clean RIYL: The Strokes, Girls, […]

A Ghost At The End Of The World

Acoustic leaning three piece from Seattle. Some quieter tracks, a few rocking ones. Definitely a variety, from droney noises to indie rock. Childlike lyrics, a bit quirky, overall decent, cute is an appropriate word.  Play: 2*, 9*, 13, 14, 15, 17, 8 (mellow), for droney noise try 6, 16, ghost sounds try 10 FCC: ok […]

Mother

Hot on the heels of their first EP, Hollands comes out with a second EP. It makes me happy, rock with melodies that are simple and complex at the same time. Yummy basslines interplay with guitar, violins and synthesizers nicely. #1, 3, 4, 5. #6 is more folky.

Kitty, Daisy and Lewis

3 siblings in England made this awesome album influenced by R&B, blues, swing, hawaiian, rock & roll, country & western. The album was made with vintage 40s and 50s instruments and recording equipment, which gives it a real authentic old timey feel.  It reminds me of drinking coffee and reading the Sunday paper while listening […]

Eureka Birds

6 piece pop band plays big, dramatic, moody story songs with many instruments and time changes. RIYL The Decemberists. Nice kazoo on #2, cabaret feel on #3.

This Is for the White in Your Eyes

This Danish ensemble creates mostly slow, orchestral pop led by Jannis Joya Makrigianni’s big soulful voice. While the songs themselves are well textured and arranged, Jannis’ voice really is the centerpiece. In that way it reminds me a bit of Rufus Wainwright but more subtle, a bit less theatrical. #4 feels a bit out of […]

“arrow”

Minimal, pretty dream-pop/folk duo. sweet, childlike vocals. #5 is a Genesis cover! tracks: 1 2 3 5 6 riyl: camera obscura, my brightest diamond, feist *slomo recommends

EP II

Violet Vector and the Lovely Lovelies is a psychedelic pop band with lots of guitar and synth.  Catchy melodies, lovely lyrics and vocals.    Clapping is present in the last track! FCC: 4 Recommended Tracks: 3, 5

“silhouette”

Full, dramatic, epic rock with violin, horns, piano, organs, climaxes & valleys.  A sentimental party in your ears brought to you by one guy (Harald Froland, ex-jaga jazzist) with alot of friends. tracks: 1 3 5 6 *recommended

“moon lit”

“moody, bouncy instrumental piano-jazzy-pop.  A vintage sound thanks to the “early-60’s Wurlitzer electric piano”.  Reminiscent of “AM radio, detective dramas, twilight falling on kitchenettes, and lounge acts in their thrid set.” but “sincere to a fault.” tracks: 1 2 3 7

“tea tornado”

Paper Zoo

Los Angles based Paper Zoo is a four piece band that keeps to book when it comes to making music. This is their self titled EP and while it supplies some catchy songs and has a great sound from start to finish, there is something about Paper Zoo that turns me away. That something is […]

Neon Graveyard

Edmonton native Cecil Frena is the mastermind behind GOBBLE GOBBLE and his debut album, Neon Graveyard, is his first release of music he genre-izes as ‘Flu Pop’. “Flu Pop expresses anxious celebration: having a full-on candy kid rave on the scorched earth after the bomb drops,” explains Frena. “I’m aiming for this to be like […]

Bell Ord Forrest

I Love You – Bell Ord Forrest The album cover says it all. The rise of electronic rock that claims is danceable party music but is purposefully not is evident here. Avant-garde art punk electronic rock is the only way to describe this album, which is better than most of the other commonplace anti-dance dance […]
