Our Dying World provides symphonic and melodic keyboard-oriented stylings on Hymns of Blinding Darkness. This record is a mixed bag. Everything We Know is Gone is a perplexing mix of killer guitar riffs and fantasy soundtrack music. The song both rocks and confounds with blazing melodic riffs that quickly become drowned out by bombastic symphonic flourishes. Survivor includes clean vocals and is a mid-album slowdown that best incorporates the band’s rock and symphonic elements. It also features emotional guitar work that nicely complements the vocals. Path of the Nomad is a more straightforward number, combining symphonics, varied vocals, and guitars that feels more cohesive, and discards some of the clunkiness of previous tracks. The chorus begs you to sing along. Veil of the Reaper begins with pounding double bass and guitars flood the soundscape as the first verse comes in, proving that they can bring the heat when they want to. It’s a ripper that wakes you up just in time for the album to end. The keyboards creep in during the second verse but aren’t as offensive as on previous tracks.
