From the label: Captured at Woodstock, New York’s Levon Helm Studios in the summer of 2011, Carry Me Home is a new album that showcases the music of Mavis Staples and Levon Helm, two of the past century’s most iconic voices who came together in love and joy, tracing their shared roots and celebrating the enduring power of faith and music. Carry Me Home features a mix of both artists’ bands operating at the peak of their powers as they work their way through an eclectic setlist of tunes made famous by the likes of Nina Simone, The Impressions, Bob Dylan, and The Rolling Stones.
An astounding a cappella rendition of the hymn Farther Along deals frankly with death and heaven, but it has just as much to say about the aspirational quests of the living—freedom, happiness, community. Stay tuned for I Wish I Knew How It Felt to Be Free, the Billy Taylor/Dick Dallas song immortalized by Nina Simone. This May Be the Last Time takes on a new bittersweet meaning. The duo rolls, thumps, groves, growls and shouts its way through a You’ve Got to Move
