“Something grander than the typical four-piece Converge” says Converge vocalist Jacob Bannon in reference to the inspiration that eventually bloomed into Bloodmoon: I. This record features guitarists and vocalists Chelsea Wolfe, Stephen Brodsky (Cave In, Mutoid Man), and Ben Chisholm (Chelsea Wolfe). The title track is haunting and features Chelsea Wolfe vocals. Viscera of Men kicks off with a moshable riff that sounds like classic Converge if it lasted longer than 15 seconds. However, the emergency brake is pulled and it drifts into vampiric vocals, cinematic FX washes and a mid-section rooted in Gregorian monk moans. Coil begins with an infectious, slow build that ends up becoming theatrical in tone. Failure Forever is a slice of wide-skies rock that bridges the gap between major label-era Cave-In and ’90s Rush. Scorpion’s Sting is coated in Old West dust, Americana twang and a bourbon-and-wine soaked vocal hum. At first listen, Bloodmoon is very Wolfe-esque, but fans of Converge’s hardcore chaos will still have something to love here as some of the tracks go pretty nuts.
