After a six year hiatus, Delta Spirit is back with What Is There. Like more recent releases from several other former indie sweethearts that have gone on to find mainstream success (see Kings of Leon, The Black Keys), this record seems to lack the grit and raw emotion of earlier work. That’s not to say that What Is There is a bad record. It’s a well-produced and perfectly decent piece of radio friendly rock-n-roll. It’s just like watching your college friends grow up, get married, and have kids. You’re happy for them and they’re probably objectively better off but you still miss the old days. The Pressure is an up-tempo track with a sing-along chorus that’s reminiscent of older work. The piano-driven and infectious It Ain’t Easy follows with pop hooks and charming harmonies. How Bout It is a murder ballad about a gambling addiction and is probably the high point of the record. The record closes with the title track that may have been recorded on an iPad in the middle of a summer rain. It’s an appropriate closer that sounds like an elegy.
