Joyce Manor – Songs from Northern Torrance

Release date: May 29, 2020
Label:
Epitaph

Joyce Manor albums have always have always been about energy and feeling. Songs from Northern Torrance sounds like a punk rock demo tape from the early aughts. These songs evoke small venues, parking lots and basements. Check out the anti-authoritarian anger on the crowd favorite, House Warning Party. DFHP (short for Do Fish Have Periods) is carried by vocals and a guitar. Several other songs are stripped down, bare-bone rarities and B-sides. The rapid cymbal hits and downtuned guitar of Constant Nothing convey newfound intensity after half a record of smaller, more anxious acoustic sounds. This probably isn’t the first Joyce Manor album you should listen to. But it’s definitely fun if you’re a more established fan.
