The Menzingers – From Exile

Release date: September 25, 2020
Label: Epitaph

The Menzingers, like the rest of us, have been stuck at home a lot during this past year. Thankfully, they made the best of the downtime. The band re-recorded their 2019 album Hello Exile and reimagined the 12 tracks for a new stripped-down record, From Exile. I’m a sucker for angsty songs about breaking love and Anna is just that. High School Friends hits hard for those of us who are post-college. It’s brilliant and goes full-on western with a harmonica. Strawberry Mansion meanwhile is a brilliantly summery-feeling number that masks some overtly-political lyrics. Last to Know and Strangers Forever are good examples of how the band didn’t phone it in by playing acoustic covers note for note. Instead, you can tell that serious thought went into the composition of each track. Sometimes resulting in totally different emotions and interpretations. Lastly, I Can’t Stop Drinking could probably be the theme song for the past 11 months.
