Mastodon released Medium Rarities to satisfy fans during a long gap between full-length records. This record includes a couple of new tracks, instrumental versions of their hits, some live tracks and a couple of B-sides. Fallen Torches is powerful and probably the best track on the whole album (check out the closing riff). We get some interesting covers on this album. A Commotion (Feist), A Spoonful Weighs a Ton (The Flaming Lips), and Orion (Metallica) are all worth a listen. The instrumental tracks (Asleep in the Deep, Toes to Toes, and Jaguar God in particular) really draw attention to band’s instrumentation and composition. The live tracks all sound distorted and overall the album doesn’t have a ton of coherence or direction. Admittedly, it’s better than the average filler album but this is just a placeholder until Mastodon gets done recording their new record.
