Insomnium – Heart Like a Grave

Release date: October 4, 2019
Label: Century Media Records

Heart Like a Grave is full of “Finnish melancholy, drawing inspiration from some of the bleakest tales, lyrics, and poems of the north.” For the most part, the quintet effectively balances between memorably light and dark moments. Insomnium delivers some truly gorgeous and devastating passages, alternating between symphonic fragility and straightforward fury. Easily one of the best songs on the album, Valediction shows the band to be in excellent form. The clean vocals are poignant and make the death roars sound especially potent. Despite some catchy vocal hooks, bleakness hangs over everything. Title track, Heart Like A Grave opens with goose-bump inducing guitars that build into a dirge-like march, before swinging back to the subdued opening licks. Heart Like A Grave is an intriguing album. Insomnium inviting listeners into a world of bleak doom and sadness. Yet, the melody underlying the bleakness assures the listeners that there the darkness is not impenetrable.
