The new Shabazz Palaces release is actually a double header. The first album introduces us to the character of Quazarz, and the spacey, sparsely populated world in which he lives. The first album is admittedly bland, with few if any solid beats to grab the listener. the lyrics are classic shabazz delivery but does little to create a weird or different world from the one we are all mired in. it’s an introductory album and very much feels like one.
The second album is where music starts to pick up, following the character of Quazarz on a journey through his world. Though still very “spacey” in terms of how the beats are constructed and still pretty sparse compared to other hip-hop and even other shabazz projects, but there are some gems in here to grab the audiences attention and get a booty bumping.
