The Mountain Goats are now sixteen albums deep, and yet still find a way to keep things fresh. This time around, the theme is – as the title implies – dark, gritty and gothic. And while some songs follow this idea more than others, the collective feeling is one similar to the art depicted on the cover: gray, melancholy and downcast, but with interesting and bright splashes of color to keep things interesting. The Mountain Goats are not unfamiliar with this theme, but they bring it out in full on this record, especially in the sound of the record. With deep orchestral sounds, dark instrumentation, and fun song names, they bring a sound to the table that few are even attempting, and even fewer to the level that they do. This album is rich with interesting and thoughtful sounds with a dark and gritty sound and is a must listen.
