Modern Life is the sophomore album from Canadian singer-songwriter Jeen (also known for her work in the band Cookie Duster with Broken Social Scene’s Brendan Canning). Her 2015 debut Tourist was one of the most unexpectedly enjoyabl albums for me that year. This follow-up album is more of a full band affair, as you can see by the cover art, and has an energetic mid 90’s alternative rock sound. Several songs “Modern Life (Electrified)”, “Sirens” and “100 Miles High” combine drum machines with overdriven guitars, bringing to mind bands like Elastica or Luscious Jackson, while others such as “All Night All Day” and “New Minority” hew closer to the more upbeat songs on Tourist. A little different but still enjoyable if you liked her last album.
