Y La Bamba, the Portland, OR band led by Luz Elena Mendoza, brings us lush, melodic indie-folk-pop with a distinct Latin flavor, and lyrics in both English and Spanish. The catchy lead single “Libre” (which features the Maria Maria Choir) is a good starting point, but there is much more to the album than that. Some other standouts are the folk ballad “Ostrich” and epic closing track “Ulysses”. Mendoza’s Mexican heritage plays an important part in the her, which talk about growing up and transformation in a poetic way.
