Danilo Perez – Panama 500

Spanish explorer Balboa crossed what is now Panama to see the Pacific ocean in 1513…500 years ago.  This is Danilo’s musical portrait of that event and subsequent history.  To represent this “clash of cultures” he has assembled musicians from the U.S., Cuba, Brazil, Panama and from the indigenous Guna people. 2014 marks 100 years since the opening of the Panama Canal, commemorated in tracks 6,7&8. This ambitious music draws from many musical/linguistic streams to achieve a programmatic arc that sounds as if it could serve as a soundtrack for a film of that history and those cultures.  Intriguing.
