Anchoress– Set Sail
Release date: 2013May13
Label: Defiled Under Music
Rating: 4.5/5
This is the first release from Vancouver B.C’s Anchoress. “Murder In The Sky over Burnaby” starts out with a loud scream, quickly followed by “Cadillacs”, which has to be influenced by the Gorilla Biscuits due to the chugging pace. “Coral Bones” expands upon that with loud, frenetic guitars and pounding drums. I really dug “Zombies on a Plane” (zombies on a motherfucking plane!), “Curses” (yet again, highly reminiscent of the GBs but with a longer blueprint), “Apocalunatics” (love the pauses in-between the pounding drums/throbbing licks) and “Brooks Was Here” (urgent, melodic and well fleshed-out). They are that fucking good, though they sound nothing like Fucked Up. A totally different plane of existence and yet another reason why press writers should actually listen to the bands they’re comparing others to. Do check this out, even if it’s technically an older release that just got NA distribution (what took so fucking long?).
