Blood and Sunshine EP

San Francisco based producer/singer-songwriter. Mellower croony vocals over some digital type hip-hopish beats. I liked the piano addition in there. RIYL like mellower Niggy Tardust minus the overt political messages. FCC Clean. Play 1, 3, 5

Greater than One – London

This is a remastered rerelease of this 1989 album. 2 cds here. Like industrial dubby beats layered with the familiar to the obscure sound samples. Samples include MLK speech snippets to like avant-gardey random noises. Pretty original collaging of sampled sounds. FCC 5 on “we dream” CD. Play Any. MLK track is #1 on both […]

Hugh Cornwell – Hooverdam

Ex Guitarist/vocalist for The Stranglers. 3 piece band with guests on certain tracks. Kind of mellowish punk-rock…poppish catchy song structures. FCC Clean Play 1, 3, 7 (rad medieval-guitar instrumental), 8.

Lithops – Mound Magnet pt. 2: Elevations Above Sea Level

AKA Jan St Werner. Like noise infused rock electronica. Futuristic psychedelic sound bytes collaged over the electro-type thump-thump. Interesting… FCC Clean Play Any– your correspondent liked 4, 11.

Vieux Farka Touré: Fondo

Second album from Malian guitarist/singer/songwriter & son of the legendary Ali Farka Touré.  Vieux studied at the at the National Arts Institute in Bamako (Mali) and developed his own unique brand of “koroboro rock” (black African rock, in his native dialect). Homemade CD from pre-release digital download provided by promoter.

Vancouver, BC trio’s 3rd release. They met as students of a community college music program. All original compositions by members, mostly by Cole(b). Has some rock/funk elements but dominated by improv counterpoint.

Change This Song

Dutch piano trio on all-original compositions. Tight ensemble work. Full of humor. BDJF performance(6/11/09)           PLAY

In Transition

Collective improv quartet play original compositions as a group. Brooks(tp) who is new to the group stands out. Requires & rewards close attention.

Spectre

Seatlle based saxophonist leads quartet in post-bop recording. Has appeared on many Origin recordings as a sideman.

Human Activity

Brad(gt) leads this quintet of NYC based progressive jazz musicians. Fun, smart & showing many influences. Intricate themes w/interesting rhythmic twists. Ralph Alessi(tp) stands out.          EXCELLENT

Plays Tribute To Oscar Peterson

11 cuts either by Peterson or made famous by him. Not possible to cover Oscar’s 60 yr. career in one recording, so you may see more from this ensemble. Marian Petrescu, Romanian piano player stands out.

Flexicon

Mariott(tp) leads on this west coast ensemble in post-bop style. Mostly standards except original on #4,6&8. Prolific recording history especially as a sideman.

Baby Darling Doll Face Honey

Band of skulls debut “Baby Darling Doll Face Honey” blends many rock genres into one tasty concoction.  Mixing prog rock, Brit pop, folk rock, and some blues (phew), they do a good job of bringing these genres together without overdoing it.  The first track “Light of the Morning” comes out rocking.  Whereas “Death by Diamonds […]

Tinted Windows

In theory, the band Tinted windows should be a powerhouse band.  With Adam Schlesinger of Fountains of Wayne, Bun E. Carlos of Cheap Trick and James Iha of Smashing Pumpkins forming a band fronted by Taylor Hanson.  Having said that, this album falls flat on its face.  This album is very mainstream, pop rock with […]

Sharp Teeth

Sharp Teeth’s self-released album does not have a lot going for it.  I really liked the first song, but as the album went on I realized every song sounds like the first song.  Very standard hardcore with female vocals, this band sounds like a bunch of teenagers playing in their parents basement before being called […]

West Rider Sampler

Kasabian’s latest is a sampler for their upcoming release “West Rider”.  These guys are Brit rockers with an edge.  Mixing rock, funk and a smidge of house these guys have a sound that really draws you in.  Sort of like bad a** Happy Mondays.  Highly recommended.

Sense of Urgency

Beati Paoli debut album “Sense of Urgency” has a post punk/alt rock sound.  Lead singer, Gregory Goode, sounds a lot like Elvis Costello.  Their music has a jangly, theatrical bent to it while using the latest indie instrument, the toy piano, to lighten it up. Another great summer album, these guys would probably be great […]

Troubled Child

R&B-influenced blues. It’s okay to play if you’re looking for a break from classic blues, but the snyth sounds do push it toward the “smooth-jazz” category.

Chicago Blues Harmonica Project

A compilation disc featuring working bluesmen with enjoyable harmonica on every track.

New Moon Hand

Aggressive, vaguely menacing guitar and an all-around ominous sound. Sound ranges from ornery R.L. Burnside-type guitar to scratchy ZZ Top-ish riffs. If ZZ Top grabbed a bottle of hooch and took it to the delta to play some blues, it just might sound like this.
