the House on the Causeway

The Reigns have a distinct sound to them.  A mix of rock and ambient, they create a dark, sombre soundscape.  The vocals are almost like another instrument, they blend with the rest of the instruments and don’t stand out.  The sombre tone is fortified by “creepy”  background noise and a looming piano that conjure’s visions of […]

Lost Houses

Curtains of Nights debut album Lost Houses is more of a fizzle than a bang.  A metal/rock album should get your head banging, but this just gives you a headache.  The female vocals sound like a screechy teenager and all the songs sounds identical to each other.  This band has nothing new to add to the genre […]

La Musique du Jardin

Rosemary’s Garden has a very melodic, folk alt sound to it.  The lead singer, Michael Louis de Terre, has a rough, yet harmonic voice reminiscent of Kurt Cobain.  The music however is nothing like Nirvana.  They have a mellow, polished groove more like the Wallflowers.  Check out tracks 2,7

Songs Of Shame

A mix of roots, indie, and lo-fi rock. Off-kilter drumming with psych guitars creates a sort of underground pop sound. High-pitched male vocals are weirdly beautiful. Third album from this Brooklyn band. Great listen. RIYL Velvet Underground Sugg# 3, 1, 5, 6, 9, 11

Songs from the Back Porch

Scotty Don’t, aka Badfish, creates a great album. With a heavy Sublime feel, this album will rock you to sleep, or keep you running away from your fears. Interesting lyrics and unique yet classy guitar work gives Songs from the Back Porch a good rep. Listen to this if you have ears. RIYL: Sublime     Hit […]

Artis

Artis is very light rock with vocals that don’t match. The album has a very dreamy feel to it and makes the listener wonder what is going on. Check this album out if you have nothing better to listen to. RIYL: Copeland, Mute Mouth     FAVS: eh. 1,2

Set In Stone Remixes

A music project by a collection of talented DJs. The sound is a combination of Led Zeppelin, Cat Stevens, David Bowie and many more. It is classic rock n roll crossed with fantastic house mixes. RIYL: Any of the above listed      Favs: All of them

Red Datsun

Red Datsun doesn’t have strong vocals but proves to successfully create ska felt rock. The Doors seem to be the main influence on this band, giving it a somewhat unique feel. RIYL: The Doors  Favs: 5, 6

18th Dye

Amorine Queen pulls together to create an album that seems like the Smashing Pumpkins combined with Psychedelia. The album keeps the vocals very distant, but it feels like they are in your face. Well produced music and very upbeat. RIYL: Smashing Pumpkins    Favs: 2,4

Never Take Us Alive, EP

Upbeat and heavy guitar with solid lyrics. There are two versions of this song on the EP, and I think the only difference is that the radio version is ten seconds shorter. FCC Clean

We Are What We Pretend To Be

Loud rock with refined harmonies and lyrics. This is a cohesive album with a strong vocals, lots of electric guitar, and some interesting bass lines. The last few songs sound a bit different from the rest of the tracks. Lyrics are included. Sugg #6, 7, 8 (slower) FCC #5

The Beautiful Confusion

Indie folk-rock. Haunting sound on some of the songs. Similar to Wilco and Calexico. Play if you want something slower; all the songs are about the same tempo. Sugg #1, 3, 5, 8 FCC clean

Mega

Sounds like the progeny of the better half of the 80’s and David Byrne (The lyrics even refer to walk-mans). The songs are short but are enough to fill you up. Sugg #3, 4, 6, 7, 9 FCC #1

Remind Me Where The Light Is

Upbeat indie style with some slower tracks and a strong female and male lead. Andrew recommended this band, and I think they are a group to watch. Their sound is comparable to Say Hi, and the lyrics compare to the storytelling in Belle & Sebastian. Sugg #1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11 FCC clean

Dirty Jokes

The title of the album says it all. From the song titles to the raw, un-produced sound, this is clever rock. A few of the song titles, such as “I Don’t Give A Shit About Colin Ferrell,” and “Tittie Ocean,” are FCC unclean but the actual songs don’t have words. These guys have wit and […]
