Classic post-bop ensemble in a live performance in a club in W.Orange, NJ. All compositions & arrangements by Reeves.

Tom Brantley: Boneyard

A broad example of the trombone in the lead w/different size ensembles consisting mostly of musicians form S. Fla. Cuts #2, 3, 6, 7, 8 & 9 are live performances. Post-bop.

Fareed Haque: Flat Planet

Sounds like a jazz groove meets Hindustani folk music. Led by Haque (gt) & recording in Chicago w/an ensemble of Mid-Western musicians of all creeds.

Claudio Roditi: Brazillance X4

Crisp trumpet playing by this veteran player who leads his quartet on 5 pcs. by Brazilian greats & 4 of his own compositions.

South Nine Ensemble: Doing It Augie Style

Small big band led by Augie Haas (tp) from the S. Fla. region. Good arrangements & all around playing, but the cover photo has got to go. T&A will not influence anybody I know to buy records.

Nancy Wright: Moanin’

Muscular tenor attack from this woman who reminds me of the 1960s jazz style. You can tell that her origins are in blues and R&B bands. Ably accompanied by Monaco’s B-3 trio.

Kristin Korb: In The Meantime

CA blond w/cleavage & you figured that she’s a ditz. Not so, Kemo Sabe. She’s a bass player, owns recording company & she’s not a bad vocalist. That’s high praise coming form a person who doesn’t particularly like vocalists in general, male or female.

Randolph: Expansion

Gentle percolating rhythms accompany chamber music w/layer precise arrangements w/acoustic instrumentation. Some vocal choruses. Review by Eric Leff

Gutbucket: A Modest Proposal

4th recording from this 10 y.o freewheeling, genre-bending NY quartet. Album title refers to J. Swift’s 1729 classist-cannabalism treatise. Ensemble effort features reeds, guitars, organ, drums & bass on a sequence of 10 somewhat skewed punk-jazz/art-rock originals. Review by Richard Haggerty

Mark Winkler: Till I Get It Right

West coast vocalist deliberately abandons standards & chooses songs by not so famous composers. Sung much in the Dave Frishberg style.

Ada Rovatti: Green Factor

Italian-born saxophonist, composer & arranger w/a mix of original & traditional tunes with a definite “Irish” feel. Go figure. Pronounce: AhDAH RowVAHtee.
