Enclave Dispora

Second release from this husband & wife team with a definite Afro-Cuban & Brazilian flavor. I may be wrong, but I think their first release(old CD stacks) has more fire.

SONGS OF WOOD & STEEL

Los Lobos axe-man teams up w/ a number of different traditional players to dig into the roots of “real” Mexican-American music. Some of which works, some doesn’t. Most come off as very traditional though #10 is a nice blues rave-up!

Perfect Strangers

Bassist Todd Coolman and his Quintet play a nice  array of post-bop cuts on this ArtistShare effort which  is a collaboration of composers and top notch New York  jazz musicians. Eric Alexander(ts) Brian Lynch(tr).

Flip It

Tom(guitar) fronts trio on all original compositions. Edgy guitar licks should make his faithful happy. Would be a better if the rhythm section got up Tom’s arse a little more.

New Music with Guitar — Volume 6

Quite varied compositions, various composers. Tracks 1-7 reflect an infant’s day, good! Tracks 8-12 were written to represent the composer’s (Crumb’s) dogs’ personalities, Tracks 13, 14 and 20 are lovely.

Lost and Found–Electric Guitar Music

Really interesting. Track 2 is loud and rockin’, track 3 rhythmic and percussive, tracks 5 & 6 quiet.

Classical Collections — Kashkashian

Romantic, sensual and vibrant pieces, various composers. Try tracks 2,8,3,15, 20 & 24

The Viola in My Life

These pieces are quiet, slow and repetitious, reflecting the composer’s thoughts on life. They have interesting pinpoints of sound throughout, from various instruments.

The Stroke that Kills

Varied composers with pieces for 1 to 6 guitars. Track 5 strongly rock influenced, track 6 flamenco style, track 8 computer-like. Interesting!

THE GABE DIXON BAND

Piano-led trio walks the line between pop-folk and contemporary adult with their third release. Well written and compelling songs distinguish this album.  #1, 3, 7, 10

VERACRUZ

5-song EP of classically-inspired rock a la Neil Young. Featuring guests Gillian Welch and Spooner Oldham. Check #1, 3

THE WOODY GUTHRIE TRIBUTE TOUR

2 disc live recording featuring Eliza Gilkyson, Jimmy Lafave, Slaid Cleaves and others doing Woody tunes, talking stories and having fun. Taken from the popular 2007 tour.

TIME PAST & TIME PASSING

21st offering from this U.K. guitar legend who arrived on the London folk scene alongside Nick Drake in the 60’s. Solo occasion gives us a satisfying mix of folk, blues and instrumental.

VELVET SKY

Sophomore album for this Texas singer w/ a degree in music from UT-Austin who gives us gospel-inspired balladry and Texas folk-Americana. Nice offering – play any.

NOTHIN BUT THE BLUES

Title says it all – Great solo acoustic work from Calgary native. Play any!

Sings

Yes, that Charles Manson! Recorded in ’67 and ’68, the future cult leader put out more than two dozen tracks, one of which (#11) was picked up and recorded by the Beach Boys with a different name.  Briefly released in ’74, it’s an interesting look at the infamous face of the 60’s.  Sparse and expressive.
